In Ontario it is compulsory to have automobile insurance. All vehicles must be insured for third party liability for a minimum of $250,000, though $1,000,000 is perferable. This will cover you in the event that you cause injury/death or damage someone's property. Collision insurance will cover damage to your own vehicle but is not required by law.

When driving your own vehicle, you must carry the pink liability insurance card for your vehicle. This card must be shown when a police officer asks for it. If you do not, you could be fined up to $400.

Every person who operates a vehicle without insurance is guilty of an offence and is liable on a first conviction to a fine of between $5,000 and $25,000.

In order to see how much you can afford for insurance you should call around for insurance quotes before buying your vehicle.
